Alexandra Sivanicova is a Slovak contemporary artist based in Vienna, where she lives and works. Her artistic practice explores the space between figuration and abstraction, with a particular focus on memory, emotion, time, and the way personal experiences shape our perception of the world.

Working with fragmented abstraction, she builds her paintings from small, broken brushstrokes and painterly fragments that gradually come together to form figurative imagery. This process creates a sense of softness, poetic ambiguity, and dreamlike atmosphere.

Her work is deeply personal and intuitive. Rather than offering clear answers, she seeks to create an experience that leaves space for the viewer’s own emotions, memories, and interpretations. Each painting can be seen as a collection of fragments — individual moments that accumulate into something larger, much like the way memories are formed and preserved over time.

My paintings begin as an abstract accumulation of colour rather than as a fully defined image. I usually start with darker tones and gradually build the surface through many layers of paint. I continuously overlap, cover, blend, and reshape the previous layers, allowing new colours to emerge from what is underneath.

The image is constructed from many small painted fragments, each one contributing to the overall composition. I do not create the figure as one continuous form; instead, it slowly appears through the accumulation of individual marks and colour transitions. From close up, the painting remains fragmented and abstract, while from a distance the fragments come together and form a complete figure or image.

For me, this process is what gives the work its depth — the final image is not simply painted onto the canvas, but gradually revealed through the layers.
